I could hear him coming up behind me. I didn’t mean for him to wake up without me beside him.
“Sulphur.” I said before he had a chance to say a thing.
“Pardon me?”
“It’s sulphur, the smell in the air. I wanted to see if I could figure out where it was coming from, but I only made it this far before I got strangely tired.”
“How odd..”
I could see him now. Even with confusion lurking on his face he was still stunning… I started to stand up, and must have looked like I was struggling because Adrien helped me to my feet.
The night sky was bare, not a star in sight, and that made me slightly nervous. As we started back towards the door Adrien wrapped his arms around me.
“Never do that to me again..”
“I didn’t mean to scare you, I waas coming right back, but I got weak.”
As we stepped up to the door the smell of sulphur started to get worse. Where the hell is it coming from? We pushed open the door and the smell came at us full force from inside the house. Did he not notice it in here? He didn’t say anything about it, and I didn’t notice when I left.. I turned and looked at Adrien and he looked more confused than frightened. Jut then his phone went off. He stepped aside to take the call. When he returned to my side he looked distraught.
“What’s wrong, who was that?”
“The housekeeper.”
“Oh?”
“The woman told her she was a friend of yours and that you both were out at lunch when you collapsed.”
“Likely story”
“The keeper also told me she was wandering the house moving stuff around, like she was looking for good hiding spaces or for something we would have hidden before she sent her home.”
The thought worried us both. I reached for the wall to stabilize myself but quickly withdrew my hand. Why is it hot?
